The Indian selectors announced an updated ODI squad for the three-match series against England starting Thursday in Nagpur. Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who has made life hard for the England batters in the T20 series recently, was a late addition, having already begun training with the ODI squad at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Principal selector Ajit Agarkar had announced a squad for England ODIs and for the Champions Trophy last month. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah being included for the ICC event, the composition of both squads remained the same. Bumrah, being an injured frontline pace spearhead, was excluded from the first two matches of the England series in favour of Harshit Rana.

Read Also:- Players who might be benched for the entire Champions Trophy 2025.

“Bumrah was given rest for five weeks, and he is not available for the first two ODIs against England. He is being monitored regarding his fitness, and we expect an update from the medical team in early February,” said Agarkar.

It was expected that Bumrah would either play in the third ODI-for him to assess his fitness-or be a significant part of the workup toward the ICC event, but his absence from the latest squad for the series has caused further concerns over his fitness and health ahead of the Champions Trophy starting February 19. There has been no official explanation from the BCCI on why he has not been included, however.

BCCI may name Bumrah for the third ODI at their discretion, provided he is able to play competitive cricket as deemed fit by the medical team.

He suffered from severe lower back spasms during the fifth and final Test match in India’s tour of Australia last month.

With some sources reporting February 12 as the deadline for making changes to the Champions Trophy squad, any such inclusion would require approval from the ICC.

Meanwhile, Chakaravarthy has been called to replace in the team following his player-of-the-series award-winning performance in the five-match T20I series India won 4-1.

As per a news agency PTI report, Chakaravarthy got in the team as head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted him to be in rhythm and send down some overs to batsmen such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant.

Is he an addition or replacement, then?
