Three left-arm spinners being in the Champions Trophy squad have left former India cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath aghast, who feels that Jadeja, the allrounder, has the last ODI appearance in the 2023 World Cup final, deserves a ranking in India’s playing XI. Besides Jadeja, other strength left-arm spin options standing to India are Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel.

Jadeja-and Badrinath were once one of the important components of CSK-and Jadeja’s inclusion in the Champions Trophy was not something Badrinath supported.

“There are a few tricky spots,” Badrinath said on Star Sports. “I am honestly surprised Ravindra Jadeja is in the squad. I did not expect him to be in the squad because there is very little space for him in the actual XI.”

“So why would you actually take a player in the squad who might not feature in the actual playing XI? So that is a little bit tricky,” he added.

India will play all matches in the Champions in Dubai, thereby explaining why they have taken ample spinners.

Recently, uncertainty over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness led to India drafting in mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy for their three-match ODI series against England. The Champions Trophy may hinge on his performance in that series.

For Badrinath, returning Kuldeep will be crucial for India’s chances for the title.

“He (Kuldeep) is a brave boy. He is the best shot going in the middle overs. We have seen that foreign teams have always found it difficult reading a bowler like Kuldeep Yadav.”

Kuldeep was ruled out last October with a groin injury and missed India’s trip to Australia. Now, he made a competitive return in the Ranji Trophy, taking 3/124 for Uttar Pradesh against Madhya Pradesh on a very placid surface.
