In an ODI match of the Champions Trophy 2025 against Afghanistan, Jofra Archer became the fastest English bowler to reach 50 ODI wickets at Gaddafi Stadium.

He churned through the first few overs decimating Afghanistan’s top order by taking three quick wickets, thus reaching 50 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Importantly, he became the fastest bowler in England to reach this milestone, essentially eclipsing even the great James Anderson.

Anderson was the first player in ODIs to have 50 wickets for England, having done that in 31 matches. But creating his own history, Archer did it in just 30 ODIs with the milestone being reached. He also outpaced many other famous English bowlers like Steve Harmison (32 matches), Steven Finn (33 matches), Stuart Broad & Darren Gough (34 matches).

Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis still has the world record for the fastest 50 ODI wickets in just 19 matches. Among the fast bowlers, India’s Ajit Agarkar is still one among the fastest, who took the record for just 23 ODIs earlier.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first and were reduced to 39/3 in powerplay. Archer’s spell saw him dismantling strike batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz (6) with a full delivery moving in. Then once Sediqullah Atal was trapped in front of the wicket off his 4-ball innings.

Rahmat Shah tried to hook, but just managed to edge it away to deep fine-leg and Davis plucked a stunning catch, giving Archer his third wicket for just 13 runs.

The journey to this milestone took Archer almost six years, despite a blistering start in 2019 when he took 23 ODI wickets within months of his debut and won the World Cup winner’s medal. Numerous injuries have hampered his progress, as have growing pressures around the increasing obscurity of the 50-over format. However, despite the circumstances, reaching this landmark is still a big achievement.
