Following England’s miserable early departure from the 2025 Champions Trophy<\/a>, Jos Buttler officially resigned as England’s white-ball leader at a press conference on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A listless England except for Joe Root, who scored a century, suffered an eight-run loss against the Afghans that forced them out of the flagship event ahead of its schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

England under Buttler’s leadership<\/a> have now had three consecutive unsucessful ICC tournament campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the press conference, Buttler said; “Just to let you all know, I am going to stand down as England’s captain.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was the proper call for us and the team. Somebody else can hopefully come in and work in tandem with Baz (Brendon McCullum) to get the team back to where it belongs.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queried about what compelled Buttler to make the shocking choice, the ENG batter stated, “I believe it was very obvious that for my captaincy and performance-wise this competition would be somewhat significant. Clearly, two defeats and being out of the competition, and possibly feeling a little hungover from the competitive before made me think my captaincy had reached the dead end.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a shame. I feel sorry, but it just seemed like it’s time for me and the team to get a change.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buttler has captained England first in the early rounds of the 2023 ODI World Cup for the 2024 T20 World Cup<\/a> and then in another group-stage exit in the present 2025 Champions Trophy since winning the 2022 T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buttler said Wednesday after losing by eight runs to Afghanistan that he wanted to determine if he was ‘part of the problem’ or ‘solution’ for England’s difficulties and then act on his future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The skipper has officially stated now that he will resign from captaincy, but<\/p>\n\n\n\n
