England’s white-ball cricket stands at a crossroads after Jos Buttler steps down as captain following a poor Champions Trophy performance. Discussions have started over whether Test captain Ben Stokes could also take charge in ODIs given that managing director Rob Key is set to find the “best person” to succeed.

Stokes is still an option even though his last 50-over game came in England’s poor World Cup defense of 2023. Key told Sky Sports that Stokes has exceptional leadership qualities, apologizing, “e;Ben Stokes is one of the top captains I have ever seen, so it would be foolish not to look at him.

Still, he confessed the requirement of analyzing the effect of a double position.

Key thinks the formats now call for a different approach, so England is also open to the idea of distinct ODI and T20 captains. Among the names being debated are Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, and Harry Brook. Key stressed that the choice will not be hurried: “We are searching for the ideal candidate, someone who can run this ahead

The early elimination of England in the Champions Trophy Group 3 threw long-standing problems into sharp relief. England chose a pace-heavy assault in subcontinental conditions, which revealed team balance issues due losses to Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Further complicating their campaign, Brydon Carse and Mark Wood both had injuries. Adil Rashid was first the only specialist spinner; Rehan Ahmad was added only for an injury substitute.

Reflecting on the team’s problems, Key confessed. White-ball cricket hasn’t been our strong suit since Eoin Morgan left. Especially the batting has dropped off a cliff.

England was beaten badly in India in both T20 and ODI series, evidence of their difficulties prior to the Champions Trophy. Key dismissed reports that Joe Root was the only player to have netted during the One Day series. He corrected, “That tale wasn’t accurate. I observed the Pakistan team working hard. Poor performance did not arise from lack of preparation.”

Former players such Kevin Pietersen slammed England’s strategy, but Key backed his side. He stressed that England’s players are very passionate but under pressure have problems with decision-making and performance. We don’t believe in a world where athletes don’t care or act presumptuous. Sometimes they make errors, sometimes they are beyond control, but that is the game.”

Key also recognized the players’ need for better media communication, saying, “We say a lot of nonsense in press conferences, trying not to reveal too much, and therefore create headlines.
