Star Indian opener Shubman Gill paid a glorious visit to the annals of cricket on February 12 by becoming the fastest player in the world to score 2500 runs in ODIs. Gill, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 31, 2019, was playing his 50th ODI match for India on Wednesday against England at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where he broke the record of former South African player Hashim Amla, who had taken 53 innings to get to the 2500-run mark in ODIs.
Gill needed 25 runs on Wednesday to reach the 2500-run mark in ODIs and achieved it when he hit a four off the fifth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings bowled by Gus Atkinson to complete the target.

Gill is in the form of his life in the series India are playing against England. Punjab’s pride hammered 87 runs from 96 balls in the first match at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on February 6, and in the second ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday (February 9), the 25-year-old scored 60 runs from 51 deliveries.
Gill holds an ODI batting average of over 60, and he would like to carry on with his good start in the third ODI to help India whitewash the English team before leaving for Dubai to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Gill, in addition to moving to No. 2 in the ICC ODI batter’s rankings, has eleven steps down to bat for India in the last match of the home series against England, succeeding his opening partner and India captain Rohit Sharma. Gill stands at 781 rating points, with Rohit at 773.
Former Pakistan captain and star batter Babar Azam is the world No. 1 ODI batter. The 30-year-old cricketer from Lahore has 786 rating points.
Like Gill, Babar is playing an ODI match on Wednesday, and if the right-handed batter manages to score at least 33 runs for Pakistan against South Africa in Karachi during the third match of the tri-series, he will become the fastest batter in the world to score 6000 runs in ODIs.
