India is a land known for producing some of the finest spinners. In the country’s glorious history, we have seen the rise of many spinners, who not only troubled the batters but also helped India win innumerable matches.
Among those, Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja carved their places with their spin mastery. All three of them have different spin bowling skill sets, but their main goal remained the same – to dismantle the opposition by taking wickets.
Kumble was the flag-bearer of India’s spin attack in the 1990s and 2000s, while Ashwin and Jadeja bowled in tandem for the larger parts of their careers. Apart from their spin wizardry, these three players also displayed their batting skills, scoring crucial runs in many crunch situations.
Their all-round skills brought many wins and laurels to India, making them one of the biggest match-winners for the team.

Looking at the wickets tally, you can see Kumble is miles ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja. In fact, the former leg spinner is the leading wicket-taker for India in Test cricket.
Ashwin trails Kumble, occupying the second spot with his 537 scalps, with his last wicket coming in the 2024 Adelaide Test before he retired from all formats. Jadeja is still active and may look to cross the 400-wicket barrier.
Jadeja’s batting, though, is superior to the other two players, with his average hovering around 35. He has four Test hundreds under his belt, with his highest score being an unbeaten 175 against Sri Lanka.
But Ashwin has the most tons among them, scoring six hundreds, with his best score being 124 against the West Indies. Kumble’s highest Test score is an unbeaten 110 against England, which is his only century in the format.
Speaking of their best bowling, Kumble has a perfect ten-wicket haul in an innings, delivering the figures of 10 for 74 against Pakistan. He is just one of the three bowlers who have taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings.
Ashwin and Jadeja have racked up seven-wicket hauls to record their best figures. Ashwin’s seven for 59 came against New Zealand in 2016, while Jaddu’s seven for 42 came against Australia in 2023.
Interestingly, Ashwin and Jadeja have almost the same bowling average, while Kumble averages a bit higher at 29.65. The Ravi’s also have better economy and strike rates than Kumble, though it may be due to the surfaces they bowled on.

All three spinners were equally good with the ball in the ODI format. But if we look at the overall stats, then Jadeja clears them both and emerges as the best ODI player.
The left-hand all-rounder has been an asset for India in 50-over cricket, often delivering tight spells and contributing crucial knocks. His best bowling performance came against South Africa, returning with figures of five for 33, while his highest score is 87 against England.
But Kumble’s bowling numbers are superior, with his average (30.89) and economy (4.30) being better than the two. The wrist spinner still leads India’s wicket charts with 337 scalps while being a decent batter with 903 runs. His highest score was 26 against Australia, and he crossed the 20-run mark only seven times.
Ashwin was India’s reliable spinner in the 2010s, using his variations to outfox batters, taking 156 wickets. He was a handy batter in ODIs, with his best score being 65 against New Zealand – his only ODI fifty.

Kumble didn’t play a single game for India in T20I cricket, so we will only look at the other two spinners stats. Both Ashwin and Jadeja have now retired from the shortest format.
Among these two, Ashwin was a better bowler, becoming the first to cross the 50-wicket landmark for India in this format. He finished his career with 72 wickets, with the last of his T20I coming in 2022. The office didn’t get to bat a lot, though he stepped up on a few occasions, with his highest score of 31 not out coming against Sri Lanka.
Jadeja, on the other hand, was an all-rounder that any captain would like to have on his side. But he couldn’t leave up to the mark, especially with the ball, taking 54 scalps in 74 games. His best batting performance was an unbeaten 46 against England.
