Most runs in an over in a game of cricket can be scored technically at 36. As there are six legal deliveries and a batter can hit six consecutive sixes. In international cricket, it has happened six times when a batter has hit six sixes in an over. Four times it has happened in T20Is while twice in ODIs.

5. Shahid Afridi vs Harbhajan Singh – 27 runs
Former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi was known for his powerhitting, and he has done it many times. During a Test between India and Pakistan in Lahore in 2005-06, he hit four sixes in one over from Harbhajan Singh and collected a total of 27 runs.
4. Keshav Maharaj vs Joe Root – 28 runs
Many will be confused because Keshav Maharaj is a bowler and Joe Root is a batter. But this role switched during a Test in Port Elizabeth between South Africa and England in 2019-20. Maharaj collected four boundaries and two sixes in one over of Root and scored 28 runs in total.
3. George Bailey vs James Anderson – 28 Runs
James Anderson was one of the best pacers in Test cricket, but he also had off days. In a test match against Australia at Perth during the 2013-14 Ashes, George Bailey hit three sixes, two fours, and two doubles off one over from Anderson to score 28 runs in his one over.
2. Brain Lara vs Robin Peterson – 28 Runs
Brian Lara was known for his calm and cool batting style, but he has taken a few bowlers apart in his career. In a test against South Africa in Johannesburg during 2003-04, he smashed spinner Robin Peterson for 28 runs by hitting four fours and two sixes in an over. Lara made 202 in that game.

Only once more than 30 runs are scored in an over in Tests. That record is held by Indian ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah when he smashed Stuart Broad during a rescheduled fifth test in Birmingham in 2022 for 35 runs. That was an 8-ball over (one wide and one no-ball). It had five fours, two sixes, and one single.

5. James Neesham vs Thisara Perera – 34 runs
Veteran Kiwi all-rounder smashed Sri Lankan pacer Thisara Perera for 34 runs in an over during an ODI game at Mount Maunganui in 2018/19. Perera bowled one no-ball as well. Neesham hit five sixes in that over.
4. AB de Villiers vs Jason Holder – 34 Runs
Who can stop AB de Villiers when he is in full song? In his knock against West Indies, when he smashed the fastest 150 in ODIs off just 64 balls, De Villiers smashed Jason Holder for 34 runs in one over. He hit four boundaries, two sixes, two doubles, and there were two extra runs of no-balls.
3. Thisara Perara vs Robin Peterson – 35 runs
Unfortunately for Robin Peterson, he is on this list twice. In an ODI game between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Pallekele in 2013, Thisara Perara smashed him for five sixes and one four. There was a wide as well, which made a total of 35 runs in that over.
2. Jaskaran Malhotra vs Gaudi Toka – 36 runs
USA’s former star Jaskaran Malhotra is only the second ODI batter to hit six sixes in an over. He did it against PNG’s bowler Gaudi Toka during an ODI game in September 2021 at Al Amerat. Jaskaran smashed an unbeaten 173 off 124 in that game with 4 fours and 16 sixes.

Herschelle Gibbs was the first ever batter to hit six sixes in an over in ODIs. He achieved this feat in a game against Netherlands during the 2007 ODI World Cup in Basseterre. Gibbs hit six maximums against spinner Daan van Bunge to score most runs in an over in ODIs.

There have been four instances of six sixes in an over. Nepal’s star all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee was the third batter to do so. He did it against Qatar’s Kamran Khan at Al Amerat in April 2024 and hit him for 36 runs in an over.
4. Rohit Sharma & Rinku Singh vs Karim Janat – 36 runs
The pair of Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh also collected 36 runs against Afghanistan’s all-rounder, Karim Janat. It was the final game of the three-match series in Bengaluru. Karim came out to bowl the final over and conceded 36 runs. Rohit hit two sixes, one four, and one single, while Rinku hit three sixes off the last three balls. There was a no-ball as well.
3. Kieron Pollard vs Akila Danajaya – 36 runs
Cricket is a game of skills and luck, but Akila Dananjaya tasted luck and bad luck in the same game. In a T20I against West Indies in Antigua in March 2021, he registered a hat-trick. But in his very next over, Kieron Pollard hit him for six consecutive sixes to score 36 runs in his one over.
2. Yuvraj Singh vs Stuart Broad – 36 runs
The first man to hit six sixes in a T20I game was Yuvraj Singh. He did it at the grand stage of the 2007 T20 World Cup against England. He smashed pacer Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes in an over in Durban to score 36 runs. Yuvraj hit a 12-ball fifty in that game.
1. Darius Visser vs Nalin Nipiko – 39 runs
It was a T20I game between Samoa and Vanuatu at Apia in August 2024. Darius Visser scored 132 off 62 balls with five fours and 14 sixes. He hit six sixes in an over from Nalin Nipiko. But unfortunately for the bowler, he bowled three no-balls as well in that over. That cost him 39 runs. This is the most runs in an over in international cricket across formats.

5. Manoj Tiwari & Chris Gayle vs Ravi Bopara – 33 Runs
The pair of Manoj Tiwari and Chris Gayle scored 33 runs in an over from English all-rounder Ravi Bopara. It was a game between KKR and PBKS at Eden Gardens in April 2010. Tiwari scored two runs off two balls while Gayle smashed four sixes. Bopara also conceded seven extra runs (4wd and 1wd) in that over to make it 33.
4. Suresh Raina vs Parvinder Awana – 33 runs
Suresh Raina has done some amazing things in the IPL. One of those is his blistering knock of 87 off 25 balls against Punjab Kings in 2014 Qualifier 2 at Wankhede Stadium. In that game, he smashed PBKS pacer Parvinder Awana for two sixes and four fours with one no-ball to score 33 runs in that over.
3. Pat Cummins vs Daniel Sams – 35 runs
Pat Cummins is not just a bowling star, but he is also very handy with the bat. He smashed a 14-ball fifty while playing for KKR against MI in 2022 in Pune. In that game, he smashed Daniel Sams for 35 runs in an over. Cummins hit four sixes, two fours, and one double, and there was a no-ball to collect 35 runs.
2. Ravindra Jadeja vs Harshal Patel – 37 runs
In a game against RCB in 2021, Ravindra Jadeja smashed Harshal Patel for 37 runs in one over. It is the joint-most expensive over in the IPL. Jadeja hit five sixes, one four, and one double, and there was a no-ball as well by Harshal. It is the most runs in an over in the IPL.

Chris Gayle is one of the best powerhitters in the game. He has hit joint-most runs in an over in the IPL. He scored 37 runs in an over against Prasanth Parameswaran, who was playing for Kochi Tuskers during the 2011 season at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gayle hit a 16-ball 44 in that inning. He hit four sixes and three fours (one on no-ball) to make it 37 runs in an over.
