With the Champions Trophy 2025 now done and dusted, everyone will set their eyes on the next ICC event. About a year from now, India and Sri Lanka will co-host the T20 World Cup in 2026. And India, the defending champions, will be in focus.
The Indian team has been playing T20I cricket on another level. With a lot of young blood in the squad, they can beat any side, day in and day out.
So the Men in Blue will enter the 2026 T20 World Cup as clear favourites. But they need to assemble a powerful playing XI to defend their title.
So here we’ll predict India’s strongest playing XI for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
India’s Strongest Playing XI for T20 World Cup 2026
Openers: Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma/Yashavi Jaiswal
After former T20I captain Rohit Sharma hung up his boots, India were looking for his replacement. And the search seems to have ended with another Sharma’s arrival.
Abhishek Sharma has already smashed two centuries in T20I cricket after his debut in July 2024. The left-hander’s aggressive batting style will help India get quick starts. Plus, he can bowl handy left-arm spin.
Going by recent games, Sanju Samson is likely to accompany Sharma at the top. The keeper-batter has been in and out of the team quite occasionally. But since his return in 2024, Samson has hammered three hundreds, almost sealing his spot.
Apart from them, the management will also keep a close eye on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Both youngsters have impressed with their run-scoring. Jaiswal can be a like-for-like replacement for Sharma.

Middle Order: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya
The aggression won’t die down as we move towards the middle order. Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) will continue the template at No. 3.
Everyone is in awe of his 360-degree batting skills, and he would like to put them on display in the T20 World Cup. On top of that, SKY will also lead the team.
Tilak Varma will follow at No. 4. The Hyderabad batter made his T20I debut and impressed immediately with his temperament. And Varma has sort of booked his place after his consecutive centuries against South Africa in November 2024.
Rinku Singh will take up the No. 5 slot. The left-hand batter has shown his power-hitting skills lower down the order. He will be crucial to providing India with a strong finish.
Then, two incredible all-rounders, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel, will show their utility in all departments. Patel can be a floater during India’s batting turn, while he will be pivotal with his left-arm spin.
Pandya will also have a similar role. And he might fill in as the third seamer if India opt to go with three spinners.
Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy
Without a doubt, Jasprit Bumrah will lead India’s pace attack. The right-arm fast bowler has been India’s top performer across formats and is an instant lock in the T20 World Cup squad.
India’s current top wicket-taker, Arshdeep Singh, will assist him from the other end. Both pacers will have a huge impact in powerplay and death overs.
For the middle overs, the wrist spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarty will handle the action. Both spinners will play crucial roles on dry and spin-conducive surfaces in India and Sri Lanka.
