Abhishek Sharma has quickly become one of Indian cricket’s most watched young batters, known for his fearless stroke-play at the top of the order. But behind the explosive cover drives and effortless sixes lies a surprisingly calm and deliberate mental process. The left-hander recently spoke about how he consciously “switches off” before every innings, clearing his mind of expectations, scoreboard pressure and outside chatter before turning on his trademark aggression once he walks out to bat.
According to Abhishek, the key to his attacking game isn’t reckless intent but a disciplined pre-match routine that allows him to stay present in the moment. He avoids overthinking opposition plans or pitch conditions in the hours leading up to the game, preferring instead to rely on instinct once the first ball is bowled. CricketBuzz understands that this mental detachment has become a cornerstone of his preparation, helping him separate the noise of expectations from the demands of actual performance on the field.
Balancing Calm Mind With Fearless Batting
Teammates and coaches have often pointed out that Abhishek’s biggest strength is his ability to stay unaffected by pressure situations, whether chasing a stiff target or opening in a crunch encounter. He credits this composure to deliberately avoiding distractions — be it match predictions, media discussions or personal milestones — until he is actually out in the middle. Once there, however, the switch flips instantly, and his natural game of taking on bowlers from ball one comes to the fore.
As CricketBuzz reported earlier this season, this blend of a relaxed mindset and high-risk batting has made Abhishek one of the most exciting prospects for India across formats. Selectors and fans alike have taken note of his ability to counter-attack even in tense run-chases, a trait increasingly rare among young batters under scrutiny. With more big tournaments on the horizon, his approach of switching off mentally before switching on stylistically could well define the next phase of his career. Stay with CricketBuzz for more insights into Abhishek Sharma’s journey as he continues to make waves in Indian cricket.
