Virat Kohli’s imperious unbeaten 139 in the first ODI against West Indies has reignited one of Indian cricket’s most enduring debates — where does he stand next to Sachin Tendulkar? Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin waded into the conversation, admitting that while he would still choose the Master Blaster ‘every time’, he finds something ‘sinister’ about constantly forcing fans to pick between two era-defining greats.
Kohli’s Landmark Knock and Team Unity
Kohli’s innings in Kerala not only sealed a series-opening win for India but also pushed him past Tendulkar’s tally to become the leading run-getter in ODI history at the 15,000-run mark. Speaking after the game, Kohli was quick to bat away suggestions of dressing-room tension, instead crediting captain Shubman Gill for cultivating a refreshingly open and enjoyable environment within the squad. As CricketBuzz reported, Kohli described the current setup as one of the most harmonious phases of his long international career.
Rohit Sharma, Kohli’s long-time teammate and former captain, echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on the mutual respect that has underpinned their partnership through changing roles and responsibilities. Rohit praised Kohli’s continued hunger for runs and expressed full confidence that more milestones await him, even as the veteran duo navigate the twilight of their ODI careers together.
CricketBuzz understands that all eyes will now shift to Guwahati’s Barsapara Stadium, where Kohli will look to convert his purple patch into a series-clinching century in front of his passionate Assam fanbase. Despite soaring temperatures and dipping interest in the 50-over format, the emotional pull of watching Kohli and Rohit bat together in Indian colours remains undiminished.
