India men’s team will be playing in the 2025 Asia Cup to be held in UAE next month. Their first match is on September 10 in Dubai against UAE. Then they will play Pakistan, their arch rivals on September 14 in their second Group A match.
Last time India played a T20I against Pakistan was on June 9, 2024 in New York during T20 World Cup 2024.
India and Pakistan could play each other up to three times in the tournament. After the group stage they might meet again in the Super 4 on September 21 and possibly in the final. Looking back at the tournament’s history, India and Pakistan have never played each other in the final in the 16 editions of the tournament.
India is the current Asia Cup champion having won the 2023 edition by defeating Sri Lanka in a one-sided final with a low score. BCCI was supposed to host the tournament. Sources in May had mentioned that India might not participate or host the Asia Cup after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. But BCCI changed its mind and the tournament was moved to a neutral venue.
If India had not participated in the Asia Cup, the tournament would have been in jeopardy because Indian sponsors and broadcasters are responsible for a major chunk of the tournament’s revenue.
Had India pulled out, it would have caused huge financial problems and put the entire event at risk. With India participating, the tournament is sure to be a success as it brings in a lot of interest especially among fans and sponsors. The decision to move the tournament to UAE as a neutral venue was taken to address the security concerns while still allowing India to participate and maintain the financial stability of the Asia Cup.
