BCCI has officially announced Team India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand, and the headline news is the return of pace veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the national setup after a gap of nearly four years. The seamer last turned out for India in November 2022, fittingly against the same opponent, and now gets another opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage.
The squad was finalised during a selection meeting held on Tuesday at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati. Interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha, along with fellow panel members RP Singh, Shiv Sunder Das and Ajay Ratra, attended the meeting alongside BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The same meeting also saw the selectors finalise the India A squad for their upcoming tour of New Zealand, where the side will play three multi-day fixtures starting October 24.
Squad Composition and Key Names
Shreyas Iyer will captain the T20I side, with Tilak Varma stepping up as his deputy. The squad blends youthful energy with experienced campaigners — names like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav all find a place in the 15-member group. Both Samson and Kishan have been named as designated wicketkeepers, giving the management flexibility in team combinations.
With Bhuvneshwar’s recall, the think tank clearly wants experienced control at the death and powerplay overs, especially on potentially helpful New Zealand pitches. CricketBuzz understands that the selectors were impressed with his recent domestic form, which played a crucial role in earning him this surprise return. As CricketBuzz reported earlier, fans have been eager to see fresh faces mixed with proven performers, and this squad seems to strike that balance.
