Mumbai’s Shardul Thakur, 33, will lead West Zone in the 2025 Duleep Trophy. The 15-member team announced on Friday (August 1) includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tushar Deshpande, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were not included in the team.
Thakur had a good Ranji Trophy season in 2024-25 with both bat and ball for Mumbai and was chosen as captain over Iyer and Gaikwad. Iyer and Gaikwad both lead their respective IPL teams and have captained their state teams before.
2025 Duleep Trophy starts on August 28 in Bengaluru. West Zone skips the quarterfinal and goes straight to the semifinal on September 4-7 at BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground B in Bengaluru.

Tilak to captain South Zone
On Sunday (July 27), Hyderabad’s Tilak Varma, who plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, was named captain of South Zone for 2025 Duleep Trophy.
Four Kerala players were included in the 16-member squad after their good performance in Ranji Trophy. Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan, R Sai Kishore and Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal are also in the squad.
