Cricket fans eager for details on the 2027 ODI World Cup finally have a date to circle on their calendars. The International Cricket Council is set to officially unveil the tournament schedule on Thursday, October 1, ending months of speculation around fixtures, venues and format for cricket’s biggest event.
As CricketBuzz understands, the tournament will be jointly hosted by three African nations — South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia — marking a historic first for the continent. This edition will also see an expanded 14-team format, a notable shift from previous World Cups, along with structural changes to how the competition unfolds. Alongside the schedule announcement, the ICC will open ticket ballot registrations, allowing fans to sign up early even though actual ticket sales won’t begin immediately.
Start Date Carries Symbolic Weight
According to CricketBuzz sources, the tournament is expected to kick off on October 2, 2026 — a date steeped in significance as it coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, India’s Father of the Nation. Organisers are reportedly keen on this symbolic timing for the opening match of a World Cup being staged in Africa, a continent with its own deep historical ties to Gandhi’s legacy.
The showpiece event is slated to run through October into November, with the final expected to be played on November 21. Of the 14 participating teams, ten will be finalised by September 30 — South Africa and Zimbabwe securing automatic host nation berths, while eight more spots will be allocated based on ICC ODI rankings. The remaining four places will be decided through a qualifying process, with those teams listed in the schedule as Qualifier 1, 2, 3 and 4. Interestingly, co-host Namibia is yet to confirm its own qualification for the tournament, adding an intriguing subplot to the buildup. Stay with CricketBuzz for more updates as the official schedule drops this Thursday.
