The countdown has begun for one of T20 cricket’s most anticipated off-season events, as the ILT20 Season 5 Player Auction prepares to light up Dubai on October 1. With more than 200 cricketers from 23 countries registered for the draft, the six UAE-based franchises will spend the day scanning spreadsheets, weighing combinations, and hoping to build squads capable of lifting the trophy when the league returns.
Leading the marquee names in the pool are Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, both of whom carry proven pedigree across franchise leagues worldwide. Babar’s classical batting craft and Hasaranga’s ability to change games with both bat and ball make them obvious targets for franchises looking to anchor their top order and middle overs respectively. Their presence alone is expected to spark spirited bidding once the gavel comes down.
UAE Talent Pool Set to Shine
Beyond the international headliners, CricketBuzz understands that this year’s auction carries added significance for homegrown UAE cricketers. With the league’s growing emphasis on nurturing local talent, franchises are expected to actively pursue UAE-born players, many of whom have impressed in domestic and Emirates-level competitions over the past year. Insiders suggest teams may use a chunk of their $1.39 million purses strategically to secure these players early, given the incentives tied to fielding local talent in matchday squads.
With franchises entering the room armed with near-identical budgets, the real battle is expected to be tactical — a contest of squad-building philosophy as much as spending power. As CricketBuzz reported earlier this season, ILT20 organisers are keen to showcase the league’s evolving depth, and this auction, featuring a genuine mix of global stars and emerging UAE prospects, looks set to deliver exactly that. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which combinations emerge as favourites heading into Season 5. Stay with CricketBuzz for full auction coverage, live updates, and reaction as the picture becomes clear on October 1.
