Ahead of the opening T20I against West Indies, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has thrown his weight behind left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, describing him as a ‘genuine match-winner’ capable of turning games on their head with his variations and control. Morkel’s comments come at a time when India are looking to settle their bowling combinations for the shorter format ahead of a busy international calendar.
CricketBuzz understands that the coaching staff have consistently backed Kuldeep’s ability to pick up crucial wickets in the middle overs, a phase that often decides the outcome of T20 contests. Over the past year, the spinner has rediscovered his rhythm, troubling batters with sharp turn and clever changes of pace, and has become a key weapon whenever India need a breakthrough.
Morkel’s Confidence in Wrist-Spin
Speaking to reporters before the first T20I, Morkel stressed that Kuldeep’s unpredictability makes him a nightmare for opposition batters, especially on surfaces that offer some assistance. ‘He reads situations brilliantly and has the skill to execute plans under pressure,’ Morkel said, adding that the team management sees him as a frontline option rather than just a support bowler. As CricketBuzz reported earlier this week, the team think-tank is also keen on giving Kuldeep a clearly defined role so he can bowl with greater freedom against the West Indies line-up, which boasts several aggressive stroke-makers.
With the series opener drawing close, all eyes will be on how India deploy their spin options on a surface that could offer turn as the match progresses. Kuldeep’s recent form, combined with Morkel’s public endorsement, suggests the spinner could play a pivotal role in India’s plans, not just for this series but for the bigger tournaments ahead.
