Pakistan’s campaign at the World Championship of Legends has come to an abrupt and controversial end, with the team withdrawing from the tournament after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) declined to issue the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to its players. The decision has left organisers scrambling and fans disappointed, as CricketBuzz understands the fallout continues to unfold behind the scenes.
The tournament, which got underway on 3 October, features a mix of former international stars competing in a shorter, high-octane format designed to bring back fan-favourite names from the past. Pakistan’s much-anticipated clash against Bangladesh was among the first casualties of the dispute, with the fixture postponed just as the event was gaining momentum. Organisers had hoped a resolution would be found quickly, but as CricketBuzz reported earlier this week, talks between the players’ camp and the board failed to produce any breakthrough.
Why the PCB Refused Clearance
While official statements from the PCB have been measured, sources close to the matter suggest the board’s reluctance stems from scheduling conflicts with domestic commitments and concerns over player workload management heading into a busy international calendar. The legends’ circuit, though popular with audiences nostalgic for retired stars, does not always align with the structured plans boards have for their contracted personnel, even those who have long since retired from the international arena.
For the players involved, many of whom relish the chance to compete on a global stage again, the withdrawal is a frustrating setback. Several had already arrived or were preparing to travel for the tournament before the NOC issue brought their participation to a halt. The episode also raises broader questions about how legends’ tournaments navigate bureaucratic hurdles when dealing with board-contracted alumni.
As things stand, Pakistan’s exit leaves a notable gap in the competition, and organisers will now have to recalibrate the schedule to accommodate the sudden change. Fans hoping to see a classic Pakistan-Bangladesh contest will have to wait for another opportunity, with no official word yet on a rescheduled fixture.
