After Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired, India and England drew 2-2 in the recent five-match series in England. This was Test captain Shubman Gill’s first series with a young team. The batting order looks solid but India is concerned about the No. 3 spot.
Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan both played in the series but didn’t score enough runs. There are rumors that Shreyas Iyer might get the chance. But former India captain Sourav Ganguly has someone else in mind: Abhimanyu Easwaran.
Easwaran has been unlucky when it comes to playing for India. He was called up for the 2022 series against Bangladesh, the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the England series. Yet he hasn’t played a match.
Reports say Easwaran told his father during the England tour, Dad, I still haven’t found a place.
Ganguly thinks Easwaran still has a shot at the No. 3 position. Sudharsan scored 140 runs in six innings at No. 3, averaging 23.33, with two ducks.
Ganguly told The Times of India, “He’s still young. I think he will get his chance. I feel Yashasvi, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja have all scored runs. The No. 3 slot is the only fragile spot. Maybe Easwaran will be tried there.

Despite his disappointment, Easwaran is preparing for another chance at international cricket and plans to go to Bengaluru to get ready for the Duleep Trophy tournament.

He might also play for Bengal in a pre-season tournament in Chennai or Puducherry next week.
His father, a cricket fan, said that Gautam Gambhir promised his son he would get a long run in the team and wouldn’t be dropped after just one or two matches.
Easwaran has played 103 first-class matches, scoring 7841 runs at an average of 48.7, including 27 centuries. The 29-year-old batter also has 31 fifties. For India A, he has seven half-centuries and six centuries in first-class cricket. He was in great form last domestic season, scoring runs in Duleep, Irani and Ranji Trophy. His scores were 127*, 191, 116, 19, 157*, 13, 4, 200*, 72, 65. He has 1,865 runs for India A, averaging almost 40.

Easwaran’s father told Vickey Lalwani that Gautam Gambhir told his son, See, you’re doing the right things, you’ll get your turn, you’ll get a long run. I’m not the one who will push you out after one or two matches.
Easwaran was added to the Indian Test squad for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in 2022 and was with the India A team for the tour of South Africa in 2021. Easwaran was asked to bat at No. 3 during the unofficial Tests against South Africa and scored 103 and 55 in the two games. Even with those scores, he wasn’t picked for the main squad.
