Shreyas Iyer being left out of the India team for the 2025 Asia Cup has sparked a debate in the cricket world. Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof shared his thoughts on the same and said it’s not about poor performance or lack of talent. It’s how tough it is to get into the current Indian team.
Lot of Talent
Maharoof said India has a lot of talented players. The competition is very tough. He also praised the Indian cricket structure and said the IPL always produces players who are ready to perform at international level. This is the advantage India has in T20 cricket where adaptability and squad depth is key to winning tournaments.

The results are testimony to the strength of the Indian cricket system. Since winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, India has won T20 series against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa and England. Their last loss in this format was in August 2023 against West Indies.
Strong setup in India
In a statement to Sports Tak, Farveez Maharoof said, There are so many players to pick from. For example Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer can’t even get a place in the Indian team which just shows how strong the Indian setup is. So many players are coming through because of the IPL. It’s a tough call when it comes to picking players but based on my initial reaction.
Meanwhile Dinesh Karthik has questioned the selectors’ decision to leave out Iyer. The former Indian wicketkeeper and batter feels not including Iyer in the Asia Cup 2025 squad means his chances of playing for India are dwindling.
Dinesh Karthik labels this as unfair
Iyer was not only left out of the main squad but also didn’t make it to the reserve list. Karthik felt this was unfair especially with the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 coming up in India and Sri Lanka. In an Instagram video Dinesh Karthik said, Where is Shreyas Iyer? That’s the big question, isn’t it? How could he miss out? To some extent it’s understandable he wasn’t part of the 15 given how well Team India has been doing. They have won 17 out of their last 20 matches so sticking with the same team is fair enough.
Karthik further said, But not having him among the 5 players who are being considered for the future keeping the T20 World Cup in mind? Is that closing doors on him? That’s a bit unfair and I hope it doesn’t happen. He has been an excellent leader and an even better batter under pressure.
