Shreyas Iyer has opted out of the Test series against West Indies starting October 2.
Iyer won’t be in the India squad for the two-match series which will be announced later today. He told BCCI that he’s taking a six-month break from red-ball cricket as he’s been having recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. The 30-year-old will also miss the Irani Cup final between Ranji champions Vidarbha and Rest of India.
Shreyas Iyer has told BCCI about his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. After back surgery in the UK and a good recovery, he’s been having recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wants to use this time to build endurance, body strength and fitness. Because of this he wasn’t selected for the Irani Cup, BCCI said on Thursday.

Iyer will be the captain of India A for the three one-day games against Australia starting in Kanpur on September 30.
The batter who had back surgery in the UK not so long ago wasn’t selected for the Test series in England earlier this year.
Though he could have been selected by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee against West Indies, his decision to take a break from red-ball cricket might really affect his chances of getting back into the Test side later on.
