The BBL has been the cause behind lots of performances that turned the game upside down in the tournament. 13 years of BBL has seen thе players performing at their best and becoming the tournament’s brightest stars with both bat and ball.
In prior seasons, there have been a number of batting stars who have had their moments with the bat in BBL. The following listicle will show the five players who hit the most half-centuries during their stint in the Big Bash League.
5. Glenn Maxwell (21 fifties)
The name of Glenn Maxwell is almost always present in batting record lists. The Australian all-rounder with 21 fifties is the 5th on the list of half-centuries in BBL. He is usually called the ‘Big Show’, and the right-handed batsman has often delighted the BBL audience with his high-striking capabilities. He even set the record for the highest individual score in the tournament by making an unbeaten 154.
Maxwell has hit three fifties in a single season four times in his career. He did it in 2017/18, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2024/25. In the 2019/20 season, the Stars made it to their third final after ending the league stage on the top of the points table. The Australian all-rounder was in great form throughout the season scoring 398 runs in 17 matches with a strike rate of 148.5. At the same time, Maxwell achieved his best bowling season ever having taken 10 wickets that season

4. D’Arcy Short (23 fifties)
D’Arcy Short holds the record for the 4th most fifties in BBL history. The 23 fifties of the opening batsman fall in his account in the league. Following a remarkable entry in 2017/18, Short has been the underperformer for his last seasons. The left-hand batsman has scored only 397 runs in the last two seasons at an awful average of 19.85. His strike rate too has been downsized in the span of two years. Short is eager to get back the run-scoring spree of the previous season and outclass the bowlers again playing for the Adelaide Strikers.
Short’s best showing in the Big Bash League came in 2018/19. That season, the left-handed opening batsman made 637 runs, the highest ever and second only to his own score in a BBL season. During the franchise, he registered 6 half-centuries, a rare feat at an average of 53.08 and a strike rate of more than 140.
3. Aaron Finch (26 fifties)
Aaron Finch is in the 3rd position when it comes to the most fifties in the BBL. The ex-Aussie captain made 26 in the tournament. Finch was the backbone of the Australian team in the one-day and twenty-over formats in international cricket. The opening batsman was unable to achieve that level of success in the Big Bash League, though. He has scored the second-most runs in the tournament and despite his consistency, the right-hand batsman has not been able to create a huge impact in the BBL. His strike rate in the tournament is 131.12 compared to 142.5 in T20Is.
Finch retired last year after playing for 13 seasons with the Melbourne Renegades. His best year in the league was 2016/17. He scored 354 runs in the season and hit four fifties. The opening batsman has had four fifties per season two more times in 2021/22 and 2022/23.
2. Shaun Marsh (27 fifties)
Shaun Marsh now has the prestigious second place when it comes to the most fifties scored in BBL history. The man from the middle of the batting order has amassed a total of 27 fifties during his BBL career. What is even more amazing is the fact that all these fifties have been made in just 79 matches. Shaun is credited for being among the best batters of BBL wonderland even though he does not have a single century to his name. The Australian-born batter has been a consistent performer in the league. He was through last season, a well-decorated player of the league.
Shaun’s greatest season in the Big Bash was in 2012/13 during which time he scored 412 runs. The batter from Perth Scorchers was the top scorer of the tournament. The left-handed batsman scored five fifties in nine matches. Even though a transfer to the Melbourne Renegades late in his career, he did not stop his scoring. Shaun hit six fifties in his first two years with the Renegades.
1. Chris Lynn (31 fifties)
Chris Lynn, just like many batting records, ranks first for having the highest number of fifties in the BBL. The top-order batsman has scored 31 fifties in the leading T20 league. Lynn’s ability to continuously produce 300+ runs every season while keeping up with a strike rate of 149 makes him an essential player in the competition. The right-handed batsman also holds the record of scoring the highest runs in the BBL. Lynn has proven to be one of the best batsmen against high-speed bowling and he is also quite good at dealing with short-pitched deliveries. His sixes not only travel the longest distance across Australia but are also cleared with ease over the biggest boundary.
Lynn’s best season in the tournament was in 2020/21. While representing the Brisbane Heat, the opener made 458 runs and hit five half-centuries during the match. His strike rate for that season was above 154. Lynn has scored at least one half-century in a season in 12 out of 13 times. The only season when the right-handed batsman failed to do so was his first season.
