Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are probably the most successful team in the Indian Premier League. They have won five IPL titles and two Champions League titles so far, but their consistency since the inaugural edition in 2008 and until now has been tremendous. But unfortunately, CSK couldn’t defend their title in the IPL 2024. Under a new captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, they finished fifth on the table.
CSK has always bounced back whenever they have finished the previous season below standard. That’s what fans will expect from them in the IPL 2025. But before that, there is a mega auction. All teams will have to release all their players; expect 4-5. CSK has a number of stars, and it will be a massive headache for the franchise to decide whom to retain and whom to release. So let’s talk about possible four retentions for the five-time champions.

Four players whom CSK can retain ahead of the IPL 2025 auction
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Without thinking much, Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to be the first retention. He is a confident youngster, and CSK has groomed him into a potential all-format player for India. Though Gaikwad didn’t have a great season as captain, individually he was the second best player in the tournament. The CSK captain scored 583 runs at an average of 53 and a strike rate of 141.16. He also scored a century and four half-centuries. He has been the best batter for CSK since his debut in 2020.
Ravindra Jadeja
The star all-rounder has retired from T20I, and he will only play T20s in the IPL. He has been a great performer for CSK over the years, and his presence gives the team a great balance. Though his T20I numbers aren’t good for India but for CSK he has been a great asset. In the IPL 2024, he took 8 wickets with the ball and scored 222 runs with the bat. He is a great player across all three formats, and having an Indian player who can contribute in all three departments is a luxury for IPL teams.
Shivam Dube
Shivam Dube in RCB and Shivam Dube in CSK are two totally different players. Chennai has used him to his full potential, and that has been a feature of the franchise over the years. Dube in Indian conditions is a beast all-together. It will be hard to get him back if CSK releases him ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. That’s where the franchise doesn’t want to take a risk of releasing him. He is still young and is a match-winner for CSK, and is likely to be retained.

Mathessha Pathirana or MS Dhoni
The biggest question is whether MS Dhoni will play the IPL 2025 or not. There is no clarity about his availability as a player for the coming season, and there are high chances that he might not play and join the team as a mentor. That’s where the franchise might go for Matheesha Pathirana as one overseas retention.
The Sri Lankan pacer has better numbers for CSK than Sri Lanka. He has been an asset for CSK in the final overs. Pathirana played only six games in 2024 and took 13 wickets. So he is likely to be the fourth retention for CSK in the IPL 2025.
