Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were following the plan laid down. The lists of players who would stay and those to be released came out in favor of the IPL 2026 auction. What’s more, this was the very team that was part of a huge trade, swapping Ravindra Jadeja for Sanju Samson, which added to the excitement. However, after Andre Russell’s departure from the tournament, their strategies would have to be redirected.
Chennai Super Kings, with the second-highest purse available, were already contenders to bid for both Andre Russell and Cameron Green, after the retention and releases were revealed. They may still be in a position to bid for the Australian all-rounder, yet the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with a purse of more than INR 60 crore, would also be vying for him.
It is not a secret that the five-time IPL winners did not want Cameron Green as badly as the three-time tournament winners did. But as Russell makes his exit from the IPL, the plans for the Men in Yellow will have to be adjusted for the mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, which takes place on December 16.
Cameron Green is a good option for a middle-order player but not the right one for a finisher’s role. During his time with the Mumbai Indians, he showed great promise with some of his outstanding innings while batting primarily at No.3. The CSK players do not want a top-order batsman, which is why they were supposed to go for the West Indian all-rounder.
How CSK Can Adjust Around Andre Russell’s Retirement
The situation regarding Andre Russell’s retirement from the prestigious Indian Premier League about two weeks before the mini-auction will open the possibility for the franchise to have a little breathing space and time to decide their move before going to the table on December 16. The management will be doing all kinds of combinations to prepare for the mini-auction.
The Men in Yellow’s retention of Jamie Overton is now starting to make sense for the franchise at this point. It was not very surprising that Overton, who was a new name for Chennai Super Kings, was among the retained players and thus, the English all-rounder had to prove his quality only with the CSK. However, the situation is such that he has no numbers to show for his retention but there is already a lot built around his potential. Overton’s IPL strike rate is 214.28, which is an indication of what he can do if he gets a chance.
With the five-time IPL champions losing an established player of Dhoni’s caliber for a long time, the franchise will not put all their hopes on the young Englishman alone. With Russell out of their mini-auction plans, the five-time IPL champions will yet again have to look for another player who can execute the finishing act at the death end of the game. Here are a few names that the management of CSK would consider.
Cameron Green

It is a name that would come to the mind of the CSK management first, but the question remains: how the franchise would manage to acquire the services of the Australian all-rounder? If CSK picks Green, they would probably make some changes to their plans to fit him in their team.
But one can be sure that the Kolkata Knight Riders are the major roadblock on this. KKR will not let any other team close to Cameron Green if they are not able to get their hands on Russell. Full-fledged opening up of the auction for finding a replacement for the Australian all-rounder is bound to be the appurtenant fix price however rules set by the authorities will always govern it in the context of recruitment of an international player at the mini-auction.

Jason Holder

If the Aussie star is not obtained, the second-best option for the five-time champions would be West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder. He has been out of the IPL since the 2023 season, and he would be dying to prove his worth again. More than Green, it is Holder who is a better fit for CSK.
Apart from this, he also makes a significant contribution through his new-ball bowling. Holder is superb at hitting the hard lengths and also has great variation that can help him during death overs. The CSK management would be very aggressive towards signing Holder if they miss out on the opportunity to sign Green.
