Rohit Sharma’s sudden retirement leaves India facing a tough choice while preparing for the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with a five-match series in England. Finding a replacement for the calibre of Rohit is never an easy task, but some candidates stand strong for the next Test captaincy.
Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is ranked as the top fast bowler in Tests as per the ICC Test Bowler Rankings. A man who’s stepped in twice for Rohit in the recent Australian tour, he has also led India once- and lost twice. The comments about Bumrah say he’s capable of leading, though injury concerns might make the selectors reluctant to consider him for a full-time position.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is another candidate for captaincy, praised in the IPL for his tactical acumen. Though some doubt his readiness, especially after underwhelming performances in the 2023 World Test Championship Final and limited appearances in Australia, his away average raises more questions about consistency, a very strong point for Rohit.
Kl Rahul

KL Rahul has an ever-so-slightly better record than Bumrah for captaining, with two wins from three matches. Steady, he’s also seen as coming into his own as a player. Rahul’s captaincy experience at the IPL thus made him a possible candidate for the Test captaincy.

Rishabh Pant

Maybe the conservative choice would be Rishabh Pant, who has displayed considerable leadership qualities on international grounds and in the IPL. He has also served as the captain of India in T20Is. Though he has had some few batting low phases lately, the captaincy might have him through because of his decent Test average.
