The Ashes, the most anticipated Test series, is coming in November 2025 and it’s going to be intense. Before that, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has spoken about England’s spin options and it’s sparked debate as England prepares for the 5th Test against India at the Oval and has made changes to the team.
He mentioned a possible spin weakness and suggested an unexpected player as an asset for England in the Ashes series.
With the India-England Test series in limbo after the draw in Manchester, England has announced a new team for the Oval Test. Their spin bowling is under the microscope. Without a specialist spinner, England will have to rely on Joe Root and Jacob Bethell.
With the Ashes around the corner, Nathan Lyon has added more spice to the rivalry. He told the media, as reported by the ICC, that he thinks one English spinner will have a big impact in Australia.

I played with Jimmy Anderson last year at Lancashire. He said they are picking Bashir to do what I do. I appreciated Jimmy respecting my career. Bashir has been OK, he said.
Jacob Bethell is playing this Test (at the Oval against India) and it looks like he’ll be taking over the spin bowling from Liam Dawson. I still think Jack Leach is their best spinner, he added.
Despite a good performance in the 4th Test, Ben Stokes and the team drew the match in Manchester due to India’s strong 2nd innings. Going into the 5th Test at the Oval, things got worse with injuries.
Ben Stokes is out injured and Jofra Archer will also miss out. Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue have been brought in to replace Ben Stokes, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse. Ollie Pope will captain the team against Shubman Gill and co in Stokes’ absence.
