The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled for September and will be hosted by the Indian cricket board, according to ACC sources. It will be a T20I tournament and will be held in the UAE. Announcement soon.
The Asia Cup is a biennial cricket tournament that determines the best team in Asia. It started in 1984 in Sharjah, UAE where the ACC was based till 1995. The tournament has seen its share of political issues. For example, India didn’t play in 1986 due to issues with Sri Lanka and Pakistan didn’t participate in 1990-91 due to tensions with India.
Since 2009, the Asia Cup has been held every two years. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recognizes all matches as official One Day Internationals (ODIs). Recently the format has been switching between ODIs and T20Is and fans are curious.
Why the changing formats?
In 2015, the Asian Cricket Council was reduced and the ICC decided to alternate the Asia Cup format between ODI and T20I. This helps teams prepare for upcoming global events. If a T20 World Cup is coming up, the Asia Cup will be a T20 tournament. If a 50-over World Cup is next, it will be an ODI tournament.
The 2016 Asia Cup was a T20 tournament as preparation for the 2016 T20 World Cup. Since then the format has been changing as per the ICC schedule.
Who has been the most successful in the Asia Cup?
India has been the most successful team in Asia Cup history, winning eight titles: seven in ODI and one in T20I. Sri Lanka has won six titles and Pakistan has won twice.
