Delhi Capitals‘ bowling coach Munaf Patel has been hit with a fine by the BCCI for breaking the IPL’s code of conduct during a nail-biting Super Over victory against the Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday night at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Patel, known for his crucial role in India’s World Cup win in 2011, will see 25 percent of his match fees deducted and has also received a demerit point.
The BCCI’s statement on Thursday mentioned that Patel admitted to a Level 1 offense under Article 2.20, which addresses conduct that goes against the spirit of the game. He accepted the sanction handed down by the Match Referee.
Patel stepped into the role of bowling coach for Delhi Capitals last November, taking over from James Hopes, who was let go along with former head coach Ricky Ponting. He works alongside head coach Hemang Badani and Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao in the team’s support staff.
As a fast bowler, Munaf had a solid career, representing India in 13 Test matches, 70 ODIs, and three T20Is, claiming a total of 125 wickets in these formats. On the IPL stage, he played in 63 matches for several teams, including the Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Lions, bagging 74 wickets with an economy rate of 7.51.
This year, the Delhi Capitals have been having a great run in IPL 2025, currently sitting at the top of the 10-team points table, having won five out of their six games. In their recent match against Rajasthan Royals, the game was tense and closely contested. After both teams ended with the same score, DC pulled through in the Super Over.
Batting first in that match, the Capitals managed to score a solid 188 runs for the loss of five wickets. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals kept pace, ending with 188 runs for four wickets, thanks to a strong start from their openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, who combined for 76 runs in just eight overs. When the Super Over came around, DC was set a target of 12 runs to win. They successfully chased this down with two balls to spare.
Looking ahead, Delhi Capitals will next be up against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, and fans are eagerly anticipating how the team will perform next!
