BCCI secretary assures IND-W of 51 Crore cash prize
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia who spoke to ANI, recalled the change in the country’s cricketing culture that the World Cup win by Kapil Dev’s Indian team brought about. He said that the success of Harmanpreet Kaur and co. is equal to India’s 1983 World Cup heroics, and it would henceforth lead to a monumental uplift of Women’s cricket in the country.
“In 1983, Kapil Dev brought about a new era and encouragement in cricket by making India win the World Cup. The same excitement and encouragement have been introduced by the women today. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team have not just won the trophy today, they have won the hearts of all Indians. They have paved the way for the next generation of women cricketers… Women’s cricket already reached its next level when our team defeated Australia in the semifinals,” Saikia was quoted as saying by ANI.

Jay Shah, ICC’s president, was also praised by him for making sure that cricketing matters between the sexes were treated equally and that pay parity was maintained. He then mentioned that the BCCI would give a cash prize of INR 51 Crores to the players, coaches, and support staff.
“Since the time Jay Shah became the BCCI president (he was the BCCI secretary from 2019 to 2024), he has made drastic changes in women’s cricket. Among these changes was the resolution of the pay gap. Just last month, ICC chairman Jay Shah announced a 300 per cent increase in the women’s prize money. The prize money which used to be $2.88 million has now shot up to $14 million. All these measures have helped women cricket a great deal. The BCCI, on its part, has announced a reward of Rs 51 crores for the whole team- players, coaches, and support staff,” he went on.
India had a spectacular experience on Sunday night, as they beat South Africa by 52 runs to win their first Women’s World Cup trophy ever. The Women in Blue, who batted first, set up a tough total of 298 runs before dismissing the Proteas for 246 runs.
