The cult-status Sachin Tendulkar-Legend, who created history with his records and considerable influence on international cricket, would be awarded BCCI’S Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual convocation here on Saturday.
The 51-year-old Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer in Test and one-day cricket in the history of the game, after having played 664 international matches for India.
“Yes, he will receive the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2024,” said the source of the Board to PTI.
In his 200 Test and 463 ODI performances, he is the player with the highest appearances in the history of the game. He scored a total of 15,921 Test runs alongside a whopping 18,426 in ODIs.
However, he has played only one T20 International in his illustrious career.
In 2023, former India head coach Ravi Shastri and wicket-keeping great Farokh Engineer were inducted into lifetime honours.
Considered the greatest batter of his era, Tendulkar was not only a prolific batter but also one of the biggest ambassadors of the game, who played for more than two decades after making his maiden international appearance as a 16-year-old in a 1989 Test against Pakistan.
Besides holding an impeccable record and a score of batting records, he was also a crucial member of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad. This was his record sixth and last appearance on the world stage.
During his prime, a slight but formidable right-hand batsman could stop the entire country in its tracks by simply walking out to bat.
The opposing teams wanted him out, and were not shy to speak out in that Tendulkar was the only Indian batter they were afraid of.
Nonetheless, Tendulkar will be the 31st recipient of the award, established in 1994 in memory of India’s first captain, Col. C K Nayudu, who also served the game in the capacity of an administrator.
Nayudu had an extraordinary first-class career spanning 47 years between 1916 and 1963; this is a world record.
