Recently, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla answered a long-standing off-field question with respect to Indian cricket — Why is MS Dhoni not on active social media? Shukla said that the legendary former India captain dhoni does not even carry a personal phone because he was a principled person and stayed away from cheapness and frivolity of any kind.
Though Dhoni used to be an active member on Twitter, he has not actively posted anything in a long time other than the occasional happy post featuring family. In contrast, most of the current generation of cricketers use their social media to post their everyday lives and brand promotions. In fact, player managers have now seen social media as a crucial and important asset in building the profile of a player and making sponsorship deals.
Shukla made this statement while talking to YouTuber BeerBiceps in a video released on Sunday. “This is in his nature. He doesn’t carry a cell phone. Even the BCCI selectors used to struggle with how to approach him regarding the fact that he has been selected for this team or that he has to go. He doesn’t`t keep his mobile phone in his own possession. It’s his own nature. I have seen, he is more into a principle kind of person and has committed to taking all his business seriously. There is no cheapness or frippery in him.”
Dhoni may be inactive on this social platform, but he has a whopping 49.2 million followers on Instagram, with just 111 posts, and8.6 million on Twitter.
Shukla also asserted that he believes Dhoni would make an excellent politician, although it seems he does not wish to.
“It is up to him whether he wants to be a politician or not,” said Shukla. “Sourav, I always felt he would enter Bengal politics. I feel Dhoni can also be a good politician. He will win with a lot of ease; he is popular. I don’t know if he is going to enter politics; it is purely in his hands. I asked him once whether it was true that he was going to contest for the Lok Sabha seat, and he said: ‘No, no, no.'”
Dhoni has retired from international cricket but will represent the Chennai Super Kings in the forthcoming IPL 2025.
