After a tense fourth day at Lord’s, England batting coach Marcus Trescothick talked about how the crowd’s energy helped the bowlers in the last overs. He said the batting team was looking for a score of over 250 for India.
The fourth day was full of unpredictable bounces, chatter and game-changing bowling. Brydon Carse’s excellent spell and a late Ben Stokes miracle left India in a tough spot at 58/4, chasing 193 to win the series.
Trescothick on the batting: We were looking for 250+. After the first innings it was hard to guess what a good score would be because the bounce was more inconsistent than before.
We wanted more runs but we still feel we have a good score to work with tomorrow. We won’t focus on today but look forward to tomorrow, he said.
On the team’s plans for tomorrow, the former England batsman said it depends on the first hour. It’s all about the first hour, how India plays, how strong we are with the ball and how many early wickets we can take.
Trescothick acknowledged the crowd’s role in getting the bowlers going in the last few overs.
We’ve had four good days of cricket and two well-supported games. The support and energy in the ground in that last hour was amazing. Everyone was into it. We love it when the crowd gets behind the team. Hopefully we’ll have more of that tomorrow and can win the game.
We had some momentum towards the end. With a new ball you always hope for early wickets.
We got one early and then they formed a partnership. But the crowd buzz gave the lads a boost. The late wickets give us hope we’re on the right track, he said.
Trescothick said Shoaib Bashir who was hurt on day three but batted on day four is fit and ready to bowl.

On KL Rahul’s solid, old-school approach and success in the series Trescothick said: Along with other players like Rishabh, they are dangerous in different ways. Kale has a classic, old-school Test cricket style. His length judgement is good and he looks to bat for a long time which he has done well.He scored 100 in the first innings. We want to get him out early and get to the tail. He has been good in a few games and has scored in most of his innings, he said.

KL was 33* at the end of the day. Rishabh, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar still to come. Four early wickets has put India in a big hole.
