Shubman Gill has delivered a statement that goes beyond a single scorecard. His unbeaten 223 in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati powered India to 406 for two in 43.3 overs, as the hosts became only the second side in men’s ODI history to successfully chase a target of 400 or more. South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in Johannesburg back in 2006 remains the only other instance, and India now sit alongside that heist in the record books.
West Indies had posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for seven, a score that looked imposing on paper and even more so once early fast-bowling assistance appeared to favour the bowlers. But Gill, leading the chase from the front, dismantled that total with a mix of calm accumulation and explosive hitting. Along the way, he brought up a personal milestone too, reaching 12,000 international runs with a single off Roston Chase in the 16th over, becoming only the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to enter that elite club.
Volume, Conversion and a Rising Ceiling
What makes this innings significant is not just the scale of runs but the consistency behind it. Gill’s knock reflects a pattern CricketBuzz has tracked across recent series — big scores converted into even bigger ones, suggesting a batter who is no longer satisfied with starts. As captain, he also made a bold call at the toss, choosing to field first and bringing in debutant Auqib Nabi in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy. Nabi’s first outing proved costly, his economy rate of 9.51 marking the worst figures by an Indian bowler on ODI debut among those who have bowled at least 30 balls.
West Indies captain Shai Hope admitted his side fell agonisingly short after being outscored despite posting a near-record total, while India’s team management conceded that pitches offering so little help to bowlers make life tough for genuine contests. For now, though, all conversation circles back to Gill, whose blend of hunger and composure increasingly looks like the dawn of his own era in Indian cricket. Stay with CricketBuzz for more on this remarkable Guwahati chase and what it means for the road ahead.
