Virat had probably stepped back in Test, but his relationship with the fans and especially the kids isn’t fading away. Harbhajan recalled a touching moment involving his 8-year-old daughter, Hinaya, who was heartbroken at her father’s abrupt retirement.
Things began when Harbhajan expressed his emotions through Twitter after hearing the news on May 12, asking, “Why, Virat, why?” The fans were questioning such a decision, including Hinaya. She said to her dad: “Papa, why did Virat retire?” Since he couldn’t answer, she herself decided to phone the man directly, sending the message to Kohli, “This is Hinaya, Virat, why did you retire?”
Kohli saw the message and he did smile, although I am sure it moved him. His response was, “Beta, it’s time.” Fans around the world were shocked and Hinaya remained sad, but only Kohli knows why he had to do it. What he left behind in Test cricket was an unbelievable legacy of 123 matches, 9,230 runs, 30 hundreds, and innumerable cherished memories. Now, the focus will be on the ODIs after bidding goodbye to the T20Is last year.
