What About IPL Players Salaries?
It’s very easy and transparent. The amount a franchise pays for a player in the auction is the salary for the concerned player. And the salary is paid for one season only.
If we still consider Rishabh Pant’s example, he will get INR 27 crores for the IPL 2025 season. Matches might be changed as the player will also be paying tax on the salary. Therefore, the real amount may vary.
Now, if the franchise decides to retain the player for another season, he will get the same salary. Sometimes players even get increases, especially before mega auctions.
As for foreign players, they are taxed at a flat rate of 20 percent on their salaries. Besides, their national boards get a share of 20 percent too, but the IPL bears this cost and not the player. The IPL draws the fee from its centralized revenue pool.
Do franchises pay full salary if a player doesn’t play a single match?
They do. Franchises are obliged to pay the entire salary even if the player is not going to be part of the season.
Thus, the concerns of players getting selected or not in the playing XI are not that serious. The same amount for salary will be credited to their bank accounts.
But this may not be true for the players with limited availability or for those who decide not to participate at the very beginning.
In such a case if a player decides not to play before the season, then the franchise will not pay him anything at all. Getting out right now even means a ban of two years!
And when it comes to the players with limited availability, franchises pay them a proportionate amount according to the number of matches played.
What Will Happen With injured Players?
In case of an injury during the season, then the player will get the entire season’s salary. Franchises will also have to pay the medical bills of the injured player.
On the other hand, if the player gets injured before the season starts, the franchise will not be required to pay the salary.
Now, how do franchises go about paying the salary?
Well, the salary payment process might differ from one franchise to another.
While some franchises pay the entire salary at once before the season starts, others prefer the 50-50 approach: one half at the beginning and the other mid-season.
And others pay in three installments: 20 percent upfront, 60 percent during the season, and the last 20 percent at the end of the season.
Moreover, players are given daily allowances by the franchises on top of this salary. Each franchise has its own set of daily allowances for the players.
