In sports, sometimes tough calls are about survival not punishment. That’s what the International Cricket Council (ICC) did when it suspended USA Cricket (USAC) yesterday.
After many warnings, missed deadlines and a chaotic setup, the ICC finally acted. At first glance it looks harsh but when you look closer you see why it was necessary and possibly needed for cricket in America.
Governance Issues
For years USAC has been struggling to get its act together. The ICC’s requests were not extreme: a working structure, fair elections and recognition as a National Governing Body (NGB) by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Instead USAC kept messing up by not bringing in independent directors, delaying changes and having a board that wasn’t open. These mistakes hurt the foundation of its credibility.
The Olympics
The main issue is Los Angeles 2028. Cricket’s return to the Olympics is a big deal and the USA as hosts will be a team to watch. The ICC couldn’t risk a messy governing body ruining things.
With the 2028 Olympics coming cricket in America couldn’t handle administrative problems. Athletes needed clarity not chaos so suspending USAC while keeping national teams playing was the only way to balance things.
Reputation Matters
Every global sport depends on its image and cricket is no different. The ICC told USAC clearly: don’t do anything that ruins the game’s image. But constant governance problems were already causing damage.
As cricket tries to break into new markets especially the US the ICC couldn’t let internal issues overshadow the big picture. Keeping the sport’s image intact was more important than protecting egos.
A Needed Move
It’s easy to say the suspension is extreme but sometimes you need to start over. The ICC’s decision protected athletes and allowed USA teams to keep playing in the T20 World Cup 2026 and get ready for the Olympics.
This isn’t a punishment for players but a wake up call for those in charge. This might be the only way to bring accountability to a board that had been making promises instead of progress.
What’s Next
Now it’s up to USAC. If it wants to be reinstated it must make big changes. Elections, new leadership, changes to its constitution and NGB recognition are key.The Normalisation Committee has given a plan and now it’s up to USAC to deliver. If they do cricket in the USA might finally get rid of its problems and get on the global stage it should be on.
In short the suspension of USA Cricket is about survival. The ICC had to act and had no other choice. In future this tough decision might be what cricket in America needs.
Good governance, better leadership and Olympic exposure can turn today’s setback into a comeback story. The question is: will USAC finally learn?
