After not getting a bid from any team, England cricket star Joe Root will not be present for the next IPL season starting one week from now. Though he has a great worldwide reputation, Root has in the past battled to match this level in the IPL, hence raising questions about his future participation in the competition.
Root started his IPL career in 2023 with the Rajasthan Royals but only had few chances to shine. One run and a paltry ten runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in his three appearances and four games. Root’s dreams of qualifying in the 2025 matches were shattered when there were no teams interested at the auction after he chose out of the 2024 season.
Root’s poor IPL performance, according to professionals, results from his somewhat slow scoring rate in the high-paced T20 format. Franchises seem to prefer more powerful bats as the competition for spots is tight and only four foreign players are permitted in every team.
Notwithstanding this setback, Root’s overseas career is on the rise. Former England captain has an outstanding record in every form, having scored over 19,831 runs including 53 hundreds and six double centuries. His 262 in Tests and 133 in ODIs show off his batting talent.
Whether Root can translate this success back to the IPL remains to be seen, but for now he will be watching from the sidelines.
