Emerging reports have suggested that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are on the verge of announcing the New Zealand legend Kane Williamson as their strategic advisor for the next IPL season. This decision is a big move, indicating that LSG is going to utilize interesting auctions and mini auction, Williamson’s experience as the most sorting out one.
Earlier, it was reported that LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was not very happy with Zaheer Khan’s role of mentor and his performance. Even, some reliable media sources have said that Zaheer quit his mentor job because of the conflicts with Goenka and head coach Justin Langer.
In the midst of the rumors, the Times of India (TOI) reported that Goenka has decided to hire Williamson as LSG’s strategic advisor for the 2026 season. The once and still a dependable IPL batter Williamson now appears to start his second innings and play a new role in the tournament. Moreover, England’s former player Carl Crowe may be assigned the duty of LSG’s spin bowling coach.
Williamson is still active but his body which is prone to injuries has prevented him from becoming a participant in the main tournament. The New Zealand maestro has played only three Indian Premier League games since the 2023 season, which indicates his infrequent participation in the competition.
Why Kane Williamson?
Despite the fewer IPL games played recently, Kane Williamson is still regarded as one of the top tacticians in limited overs cricket. The iconic cricketer took New Zealand to the final of the 2019 World Cup and later secured their place in the final of the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Kiwis’ winning 39 T20I matches during his captaincy are mostly attributed to his masterly leadership and cunning tactics, thus making him one of New Zealand’s Top Skippers Ever.
Moreover, Kane Williamson, as a modern-day cricketer, can tell what it needs to form a perfect T20 team. He knows the constantly shifting characteristics of the shortest format and therefore is truly the best choice for the counselor’s position. Being a sharp thinker, Williamson will work with Justin Langer to give the SuperGiants’ setup by making their releases, and then through the wise spending of the purse money in the next IPL 2026 mini auction, filling the gaps with the right names.
