The Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia has its own unique features. Among the leagues, it has some remarkable regulations that like bat flip and power surge are the ones that make it different from others.
However, what is even more astonishing to know is the number of players that can be recruited, especially for the overseas ones.
What is the Squad size in BBL?
All the BBL teams have a limit of 18 players in their squad at any time during the season. Hence, teams can add a few more players, but they will be the ones who replace the others.

Out of the authorized squad, 14 to 15 are local Australian players. The teams give them direct contracts within their salary cap limit. However, the BBL clubs can have two star players who would not count against their salary cap.
Who are the star players?
The players with contracts from Cricket Australia are considered as star players. Teams can have two players under the national contract, who may not be able to play throughout the season.
These players will be put in the star supplementary list. When they are ready to play, they will be moved to the main squad
What’s the situation regarding foreign players in BBL?
The situation is, that each BBL team has a minimum limit of two and a maximum limit of four foreign players to be signed in the auction.
Before the auction, teams can have one of the four overseas players already signed. In case a team drafts four foreign players in the auction, one of them will still be considered as a substitute.
Furthermore, teams can also hire two more foreign short-term replacement players. But only three will be part of the regular 18-member squad.
What is the maximum number of foreign players that can be included in a BBL XI?
It is possible for BBL franchises to include all three foreign players in the playing eleven, but this is not a compulsion. This situation is quite different from the rule of four foreign players in all other prominent T20 leagues.
