On July 31, 2017, Moeen Ali did something special at The Oval. He took the first Test hat-trick at that ground in almost 80 years in the third Test against South Africa, which was also England’s 100th Test at The Oval.
England set South Africa 492 to win and they started well. But Moeen took matters into his own hands in the 76th over, getting Dean Elgar out for 136, caught by Ben Stokes. Next ball, he got Kagiso Rabada, Stokes taking another catch.
Moeen was on a hat-trick as he went into the 78th over. His first ball trapped Morne Morkel LBW. The umpire said not out, but England reviewed, and the decision was overturned, and South Africa were all out for 252.

Moeen Ali was the first English spinner to take a Test hat-trick since 1938 and the first player in over 100 years to win a Test with a hat-trick. It was only the third time a hat-trick had ended a match in Test history.
Thanks to Moeen’s heroics, England won by 239 and took a 2-1 series lead. Moeen had a great series, taking 25 wickets and scoring over 250 runs. He was the only player in that four-match Test series to do both.
