The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from today. He will be the seventh CEO of the organisation.
Gupta comes from JioStar where he was CEO for Sports and Live Experiences. He has over 20 years of experience in different roles. He is known for building successful brands for consumers and is a key person in developing India’s sports scene.
ICC chairman Jay Shah said, “I’m pleased to announce Sanjog Gupta as the ICC’s CEO. He has a lot of experience in sports strategy and making money from it which will be very useful for the ICC.
Shah added, “He understands the global sports scene and is passionate about technology and what cricket fans want. This will be important as we try to make the game more popular in the future.
Shah mentioned that the ICC wants cricket to be a regular sport in the Olympics.
“We want cricket to be in the Olympics so it can reach more people around the world and become even more popular in countries where it already has a strong following. We had many good candidates but the Nominations Committee all agreed that Sanjog was the best. The ICC Board Directors are looking forward to working with him and I want to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC, he added.
Gupta’s appointment followed a search that began in March and received over 2,500 applications from 25 countries. A shortlist of 12 candidates was created and a Nominations Committee including ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia unanimously recommended Gupta.
Gupta said, “It’s an honour to have this opportunity, especially now that cricket is growing so much and has almost 2 billion fans worldwide.
He added, “This is an exciting time for cricket as big events become more important, ways to make money become more available and women’s cricket becomes more popular. Cricket being added to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the quick use of technology can really help cricket grow globally. I’m looking forward to growing cricket, reaching more people, making the fan experience better and working with ICC Member Boards to build on what we’ve already achieved.Gupta has been instrumental in changing the way sports are broadcast in India and globally.
