Shubman Gill will not play in the next Duleep Trophy. He was supposed to lead the North Zone team but he is still sick.
Sources like Dainik Jagran and Cricbuzz say Gill had a blood test and the report was given to the BCCI. The board has basically said Gill can’t play in the domestic tournament which starts from August 28. The 25-year-old is resting at home in Chandigarh right now.

A Brilliant Series in England
Recently Gill had a great Test series in England. As captain he scored 754 runs including three centuries and a double century which helped India draw the series 2-2 and win the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for the first time. After England Gill took a quick vacation to Greece. But just when he was about to play domestic cricket again he got sick. It’s not too serious but serious enough to keep him out of the game. In October 2023 Gill had dengue fever during the ODI World Cup and had to miss India’s first two games against Australia and Afghanistan.
Skipper of The North Zone
Gill is captain of the 15-member North Zone team which also includes Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Anshul Kamboj. BCCI has said Indian players must play domestic cricket when they are not playing for the national team. Duleep Trophy will be played from August 28 to September 15 and Gill can only play in North Zone’s first game against East Zone before Asia Cup where he is the vice-captain. But the young captain wants to start strong and play in the first tournament game if the BCCI medical team says it’s okay.
Asia Cup in Jeopardy
And what’s more it’s not sure if Gill will recover in time for the Asia Cup. BCCI wants Gill to rest so he can be ready for the Asia Cup and there’s a good chance he’ll be fit in time. BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar recently named Gill as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team when he announced India’s 15-man squad.
Captaincy candidate for future
Some reports say Gill will be the next ODI captain when Rohit steps down. India wants a captain who can play all formats and Gill is their best bet. He has shown great batting skills and though he still needs to improve as a captain he will be the future captain of the Indian cricket team. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is 34 and ODI captain Rohit is 38. Soon Gill will take over and lead Indian cricket into the future.
