Suryakumar Yadav from the Mumbai Indians has made history by being the first non-opener to score 700 runs in a single IPL season. He surpassed AB De Villiers’ previous record of 687 runs set in 2016. Suryakumar reached this milestone with a crucial knock of 44 runs off 26 balls during the Qualifier 2 match against Punjab Kings on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Before this match, he needed just 15 more runs to break De Villiers’ record. Now, he stands at 717 runs in 16 innings, averaging over 60 with a strike rate of 167.83, which includes five fifties and a top score of 73 not out. He’s also in the running to become the highest run-scorer of the season, currently trailing Sai Sudharsan of Gujarat Titans who has 759 runs in 15 matches.
If MI had won against PBKS and made it to the final, Suryakumar could have had another chance to break Sudharsan’s record. No other MI player has reached over 650 runs in a single IPL season.
