The phenomenon of ascendant, world-class talent Azmatullah Omarzai seemed fast and furious. Although he will barely turn 25 at the end of this month, the Afghanistan all-rounder is now in uncharted waters, having climbed to the top of an ICC Rankings list.
Exceptional performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, including a maiden five-wicket haul against England and a 50 against Australia, has indeed propelled Omarzai into becoming the world”s top-ranked all-rounder. He dethroned teammate Mohammad Nabi, who has now plunged to second on the list. The right-arm pacer climbed two spots to also achieve a career-best rating points of 296.

India’s Axar Patel also made a huge jump in his all-rounder spot, by jumping 17 rankings to 13th and attaining a career-high of 194 ratings points. Omarzai was also one of the major movers in the latest ODI batting rankings, having scored a total of 126 runs in the Champions Trophy. He climbed 12 places to a position of 24 (598 rating points).
Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy campaign opened up the stage for their stardom, with Ibrahim Zadran also making a great leap up the batting rankings, inspired by the 177 runs he cracked against England in Lahore, climbing up 13 spots to 10th (676 rating points). Steve Smith of Australia soaked up a fair amount of rating points, soaring six spots to reach 16th after his batting deeds at the Champions Trophy.
Kiwi Kane Williamson, another high-profile veteran, is also on the move after leaping eight spots to 29th. Shubman Gill of India retained the no. 1 position for ODI batsmen while Sharma’s fellow Indian and teammate has risen to 4th after his Player of the Match show against Australia in the Champions Trophy semi final played at Dubai.
