Even though there is so much talk about what MS Dhoni will do in the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings star has said that his relation with the team is more than just about cricket.
At an event in Chennai on Saturday, the former India captain told the fans that whatever happens to his playing career, he will always be with CSK. Fans say, “There is no CSK without Dhoni,” and Dhoni seems to agree. The 44-year-old said that his relation with the franchise will continue even after he stops playing.
I have always said that I have plenty of time to decide, but if you’re asking if I will be back in a yellow jersey, I will always be in a yellow jersey. Whether I am playing or not is another question,” Dhoni said. “Me and CSK are together, even for the next 15–20 years.”
Dhoni, who has been the face of Chennai Super Kings since the IPL started in 2008, returned to lead the team during the tough 2025 season. After stepping aside to let Ruturaj Gaikwad take over, Dhoni had to return as captain midway through the year when Gaikwad was injured.
Just last week, Dhoni dodged a question about his playing future at another event. But on Saturday, he spoke openly about CSK’s disappointing season and what’s ahead. Yes, the last few years have not been good for us. We haven’t been good enough. But it’s important to see what we can learn. Yes, we had a hard season, but what went wrong? he said. The former India captain admitted that CSK’s batting was a concern during the 2025 season but said he was sure that Ruturaj Gaikwad’s return would fix the problem.

“Rutu will be back; he was injured, but he will return. So, we are in a good place now,” Dhoni said, also mentioning that the December mini-auction would be a chance to fill any remaining gaps.
The talk about retirement has been around Dhoni for the last few seasons and many thought he would retire after IPL 2024. But the veteran wicketkeeper surprised everyone by recovering well from a knee injury and playing again in 2025, wearing the yellow jersey once more.
Dhoni has not announced if he will play in IPL 2026.
