Earlier this year, a small controversy erupted on social media involving Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli. He supposedly liked a post on a fan page dedicated to actress Avneet Kaur. The incident happened in May and Avneet addressed it on Monday.
At the trailer launch of her new movie, Avneet was asked about the increasing attention and love she is getting online, especially from big names. The question was clearly about Kohli’s like. The actress smiled and said, Milta rahe pyaar… Aur kya hi keh sakti hoon (May the love keep coming… what more can I say).
The incident was noticed when people saw Kohli had liked a glamorous picture of Avneet. In the image, she was wearing a lime green crop top and a printed mini skirt. This online interaction spread fast and jokes, memes and some criticism started pouring in on various platforms. Since Kohli is a big name and his personal life is under scrutiny, the gesture led to a lot of speculation.

Kohli soon responded on Instagram. He said when he was going through his feed, the algorithm might have shown an interaction mistakenly. He confirmed there was no intention behind it and asked people not to make unnecessary assumptions, thanks for understanding.
But the clarification only led to more conversation online. Some people were not convinced it was just a technical glitch.
In related news, Kohli surprised fans in May 2025 by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. This was just before India’s five match series against England. He had already quit T20 internationals. After winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, Kohli felt it was the right time to leave the shortest format of the game.
His sudden retirement has put India in a transition phase, mostly since ODI cricket has taken a backseat since IPL 2025. Now that Kohli is out of T20Is and Tests, he is focusing on ODIs. His next game will be in the three match ODI series against Australia starting October 19.
Kohli’s last international game was the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2025. There India won the title after a 12 year wait against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium.
