Pakistan cricket has entered a new era with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) naming opener Sahibzada Farhan as the team’s new T20I captain, replacing Salman Ali Agha with immediate effect. The announcement came on Monday as the board unveiled squads for the upcoming home assignments against Sri Lanka and the subsequent ODI tri-series involving England.
In a surprising shake-up, Salman Ali Agha has been dropped entirely from the T20I setup, though he keeps his spot in the ODI squad as a player. Babar Azam, Pakistan’s most experienced white-ball batter, and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi have also been left out of the T20I plans, signalling the PCB’s intent to build a fresh core group ahead of future tournaments. CricketBuzz understands that the selectors wanted a captain who is currently among the runs and can lead by example at the top of the order, making Farhan the natural choice.
Rawalpindi to Host Three-Match T20I Series
The three T20Is against Sri Lanka will all be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, starting October 9, with matches scheduled on consecutive days to fit a tight international window. As CricketBuzz reported earlier, the venue has often been a happy hunting ground for Pakistan’s batters, and the hosts will hope the change in leadership sparks a more aggressive, modern brand of T20 cricket.
Interestingly, while Farhan takes over white-ball captaincy duties in the shortest format, Shaheen Shah Afridi will continue to lead Pakistan’s ODI side through the tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and England, even as he sits out the T20I squad entirely. The dual leadership structure suggests the PCB is now clearly separating its red-ball, ODI and T20I think tanks to manage workload and form. Fans and former players have reacted with mixed emotions to Babar Azam’s omission, but the board insists this is a forward-looking move. Stay with CricketBuzz for more updates as both squads prepare for a packed few weeks of international cricket.
