Virat Kohli’s arrow celebration became one of the biggest talking points during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on November 4, 2026. The former India captain produced a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Nathan Smith before celebrating with a bow-and-arrow gesture that quickly caught the attention of cricket fans.

With Diwali approaching, Kohli’s celebration added a festive touch to an impressive Indian fielding performance. His energetic reaction, combined with a stunning catch, made the moment even more memorable.

India also delivered a strong all-round performance to defeat New Zealand by five wickets under the DLS method. New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs, while India chased the revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

Virat Kohli Takes a Stunning One-Handed Catch to Dismiss Nathan Smith

The standout fielding moment came during New Zealand’s innings when Indian pacer Anshul Kamboj was bowling. Nathan Smith attempted to play a delivery outside the off stump but managed only a thick outside edge.

Positioned at second slip, Kohli reacted quickly and dived to his right to complete an outstanding one-handed catch just above the ground.

The effort required excellent reflexes, concentration and athleticism. The catch gave India another important breakthrough, with Kamboj picking up his second wicket of the innings.

Nathan Smith departed after scoring just one run, as India’s bowling attack continued to put pressure on the New Zealand batting line-up.

Virat Kohli Arrow Celebration: Why Did He Perform the Gesture?

While the catch itself was exceptional, Kohli’s celebration attracted almost as much attention.

After completing the dismissal, the Indian star ran away in excitement before pretending to pull back a bowstring and release an arrow.

With Diwali approaching, the gesture reminded fans of the traditional association of Lord

Ram with the bow and arrow. It added a festive connection to the moment and quickly became a talking point among supporters.

Kohli also followed the gesture with a playful ‘You Can’t See Me’ celebration, popularized by WWE legend John Cena.

His animated reaction entertained spectators at Eden Park, while videos of the catch and celebration began circulating across social media.

New Zealand Bowled Out for 185 in 40.2 Overs

New Zealand struggled to build substantial partnerships after India put them into bat.

The Indian bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings and took wickets at regular intervals, preventing the hosts from posting a competitive total.

Tim Seifert was New Zealand’s leading scorer with 38 runs, while Glenn Phillips contributed 30. Daryl Mitchell added 28, and Blair Tickner scored a quick 34 off 23 balls towards the end of the innings.

However, New Zealand could not build on these contributions and were eventually bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs.

Arshdeep Singh led India’s bowling attack with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar picked up three and Anshul Kamboj claimed two.

Rain Interrupts Play as India Chase the Revised Target

India began their chase of 186 but suffered an early setback when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a six-ball duck by Kyle Jamieson.

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then worked to rebuild the innings. Kohli played positively, finding gaps and keeping the required run rate under control.

Rain interrupted the match, forcing officials to revise the target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. India were set a revised target of 143 runs from 32 overs.

Kohli played a major role in the chase, scoring an impressive 74 off 51 balls. India eventually reached 143/5 in 22.4 overs to complete a five-wicket victory.

India Take 1-0 Lead in the Five-Match ODI Series

The victory gave India a positive start to the New Zealand ODI series. Their bowling performance restricted the hosts to a manageable total, while the batting unit handled the revised target effectively despite losing Rohit Sharma early.

Kohli’s contribution with both the bat and in the field was one of the biggest talking points of the opening match.

Anshul Kamboj was named Player of the Match for his contribution with the ball. His dismissal of Nathan Smith, completed through Kohli’s brilliant catch, was among the memorable moments of the contest.

India will now look to carry this momentum into the second ODI, while New Zealand will aim to bounce back in the series.
