Winning a Test series in England is tough and Shubman Gill, the new captain of India is about to find out just how tough. His team starts a 5 match Test series against England on Friday, June 20. This is the start of India’s World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27.
India has been touring England since 1932 but have won a Test series there only three times. It’s clear that the conditions in England are tough for Asian teams and the record shows that. Only three Indian captains have won a series in England and here’s a look at those captains:

1. Ajit Wadekar – 1971: India won their first ever Test series in England under Ajit Wadekar in 1971. Expectations were low but the team surprised everyone. The first two Tests were draws but Bhagwath Chandrasekhar’s 6 wickets in the final Test at The Oval won the series 1-0.
2. Kapil Dev – 1986: After their 1983 World Cup win, India won in England in 1986 under Kapil Dev. There were no hopes but the team played well, won at Lord’s and Headingley and the third Test was a draw which won the series.3.

3. Rahul Dravid – 2007: In 2007 under Rahul Dravid, India had a star studded team with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. The team was dominant throughout the series, won at Trent Bridge and the Tests at Lord’s and The Oval were draws. India won the series 1-0.
