The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the toughest cricket tournament. So there’s no doubt that it’s a challenge for everyone to win matches in this T20 league.
And in the quest to win matches, many players have had to unfortunately swallow the hard pills of losses. Now no one wants to face defeats, but a few prominent players have faced too many.
On that note, here are the top 10 players with the most matches lost in IPL history.
10. Ajinkya Rahane | 95 Losses

Ajinkya Rahane is one of India’s most technically sound top-order batters and still shows his class in the IPL. His calm approach in the powerplay overs has been of most importance for Chennai Super Kings in the recent seasons.
Rahane has represented franchises such as the Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings for over 198 matches in the IPL. Of course, he has had his share of bad days to end on the losing side close to 95 times across those games.
9. David Warner | 101 Losses

David Warner is the only overseas player to be among the top 10 players with the most losses. The former Australian player turned up for Delhi Capitals (DC) and SRH in 15 seasons.
His stint with SRH was quite memorable, as he led the side to their maiden IPL triumph in 2016. In all, Warner played 184 matches, though he faced defeats in 101 of them. His losses outweigh his overall wins (79), which results in a loss percentage of 54.89.
8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar | 104 Losses

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the finest bowlers in the IPL. But he had a rocky start to his career back in 2011.
Bhuvi’s three-year stint with Pune Warriors wasn’t fruitful, as the franchise endured many losses. Then he shifted to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where he had success with the ball.
But despite that, Bhuvi has tasted losses in 104 matches out of the 190 he has played in the league thus far.

Robin Uthappa was a key player for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was part of their title-winning squad in 2014, where he accumulated 660 runs in 16 matches.
Apart from that, Uthappa had stints with five more teams. And he played 205 IPL matches combined in his 15 years of career. Out of those, Uthappa was part of 106 defeats, which gives him a loss percentage of 51.07.
6. Shikhar Dhawan | 108 Losses

Shikhar Dhawan hung up his boots from the IPL and international cricket in August 2024. He was a dashing opener who often provided quick starts.
In the IPL, Dhawan featured in 222 matches for five teams in 17 seasons. He performed for each of those franchises but had to endure losses in 108 games.
5. Ravindra Jadeja | 111 Losses

Ravindra Jadeja occupies the seventh spot on this list. The star all-rounder has represented four IPL teams thus far.
In his 16-year-long career, Jadeja has featured in 254 matches and lost 111 of them.
4. MS Dhoni | 120 Losses

The most decorated captain and player in the league, MS Dhoni, has been on the losing side like many others. Well, he did lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to five IPL titles, but he has had his fair share of losses.
Dhoni has played 278 matches, the most in the IPL, with 120 of them ending up on the losing side.
3. Dinesh Karthik | 123 Losses

Dinesh Karthik, who retired from the IPL last year, finds himself in the second spot on this list. The wicketkeeper-batter represented six franchises across his 17-season career.
In those many seasons, Karthik played 257 matches and ended up with 123 defeats. His loss percentage comes down to 47.86.
2. Rohit Sharma | 125 Losses

Rohit Sharma might be one of the successful captains in the IPL, but he couldn’t escape defeats. The right-hand opener was with Deccan Chargers for the first three seasons, playing a crucial role in the team winning the IPL in 2009.
Then he moved to Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2011. And two years later, he got the captaincy of the team.
As skipper, Sharma guided MI to five IPL trophies. But at the same time, he has faced 125 losses out of the 272 matches he has played in.
1. Virat Kohli | 129 Losses

Virat Kohli tops this unwanted record. He has lost the most matches as a player in the IPL.
Despite being a top performer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) throughout his career, Kohli has had to face defeats on many occasions.
And the number mounts to 129 losses out of the 267 matches he has played for the Bengaluru-based franchise. This gives him a loss percentage of close to 50 percent.
Nevertheless, Kohli is an RCB legend, with 8661 runs in 18 seasons for the franchise.
